This incredible desk / table lamp is not only a fully functional lamp but also a stunning piece of art.
The starting point for this project was a 1950's Lloyd-Metcalfe Designs Harper 350 Gas Heater. This heater used to run on propane or Natural gas and was designed to be portable. They were very popular for use in VW campers back in the day.
Our example was really nice condition when we received it so it only needed minor restoration. The base is a lovely period teal colour which was cleaned and polished. All of the chrome was hand polished and although it still has a few marks and scratches it looks fantastic when illuminated. We then modified the back of the burner so we could incorporate a ceramic E27 bulb holder. To complete the conversion, the light was then wired with period correct black braided cable and an inline switch fitted. The cable is a generous 1.5mtrs long. The lamp has a few minor marks on chrome surround and a couple of chips in the powder coat but nothing that detracts from the beauty and shape of the lamp. The lamp is correctly earthed and has been PAT tested.
The lamp comes with a 40w Radio Valve Edison filament incandescent lamp. This give a beautiful soft white light from the front and a simply stunning light pattern as it glows through the burner grill and reflects everywhere from the chrome back surround.
When lit the light looks stunning as it casts the most amazing shadows. The photos really don't do it any justice at all.
This is not just beautiful light but a great piece of art that is guaranteed to be a conversation piece for years to come!
